Holly's Pedestrian Experience in Wichita.
"I was standing at the corner of 1st and Water, waiting for the light to change. When the signal turned green and the crosswalk sign switched from “don’t walk” to “walk,” I did everything correctly. I looked both ways, checked for red-light runners, and even made sure no one was driving the wrong way down the one-way street.
Then I stepped off the curb.
Almost immediately, a black SUV turned right and drove into me. I had no time to react. One moment, I was crossing legally; the next, I was bounced off the front of a vehicle. My heart was racing. I shouted at the driver to pay better attention. They looked at me wide-eyed, waved, and then drove off, leaving me standing there, shaken and bruised.
I was lucky. It could have been so much worse.
As a pedestrian, I do everything I can to stay safe, but I rely on drivers to also look, see, and save lives. Please, slow down. Double-check before you turn. The person in the crosswalk could be your neighbor, your friend, or someone just trying to make it home safely."
